Helen Forrest, born in 1917, was an American singer of traditional pop and swing music. She served as the “girl singer” for three of the most popular big band leaders of the Swing Era, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, and Harry James. Helen’s talent earned her a reputation as “the voice of the name bands.” Like Artie Shaw, Helen dropped out of high school to pursue her career in music. Helen’s big break came in 1938 when Artie Shaw hired her to replace his vocalist Billie Holiday, who was to leave soon after. Helen said of Billie Holiday, “She was so wonderful to me. She was always trying to help.”
